Simple Stick and Bead Mobile: A Family Art Project
/I love this super simple family art project that can be executed a zillion different ways.
There is no right or wrong with this one. You can ‘zhuzh’ it up a bit and make it fancy with bells and pretty twine, or you can grab what you have on hand, plop down, and create as a family.
What We Used for This Family Art Project:
An old stick that the dog dragged in and I took away and put on a shelf (#truestory)
Chenille Stems for easy beading, independence, and no one getting frustrated
Leftover wood beads that we dyed for another project, cut up straw beads, Perler beads, and alphabet beads.
Twine
How to Put this Family Art Project Together:
I put out the chenille stems with a bead already fastened on the end. I really wanted this to be a simple, easy way to hang out, so I did this step ahead of time. If you have little ones, this is a great way to foster independence.
Organize your beads in a way that will make it simple to see the choices, with no digging necessary.
Encourage your children to make a plan and choose the beads or pattern before they start to string them up. (If you have toddlers, skip this and let them go at it without a plan.)
Have fun beading! Write meaningful words with letter beads, or just make pretty patterns. Do whatever feels good to you.
Put a loop at the end of the stem and wrap it around your stick. Twist until it is secure.
Tie twine to the ends of the stick for hanging your mobile.

When my kids were small, I was a SAHM and I did not need childcare. I wanted my kids to be exposed to valuable sports and lessons, but it was more important to me to protect their unscheduled downtime. Leaving as many afternoons open as possible was my goal. At school, they were told when to sit, where to walk, and how to learn. It’s structured down to the minute. At home, I felt that my job was to provide the balance.
