Supporting Your Child Through Difficult Situations: Phrases to Help Build Resilience
/As a parent, it's natural to want to protect your child from any pain or hardship. However, life is full of challenges, and it's important to teach your child how to navigate difficult situations and emotions.
Here are some phrases you can use to support your child when things get tough:
"We are still learning."
Say, for example, your new baby is crying non-stop and you are feeling frantic. It's okay (and healthy!) to voice that you are still learning how to be a parent. Use this phrase to reassure your child (and yourself!) that it's normal to be figuring things out as you go. The same goes for your preschooler who is having a hard time with drop off or your toddler who lost her favorite stuffy. Emphasize that it's okay to make mistakes and that you are in this together.
"I'm still learning how to be your mom. This is new for both of us. We'll get there."
"You're still learning about being a preschooler. It makes sense that some days are harder than others."
When your child is feeling overwhelmed or upset, it can be helpful to remind them that you are a team and that you will work through the problem together. Convey a sense of collaboration and assure your child that a solution can be found. Whether it's a toddler struggling with a new skill or a teenager dealing with schoolwork, let your child know that you are in this together and that you will find a way forward.
"It's okay that you are crying. We are figuring it out together."
"It's okay to be overwhelmed. This is a lot, and we will figure it out."
No one expects perfection, and it's okay to stumble when you learn. By using these phrases and showing your child that you are there to support and guide them, you can help them build resilience and cope with the challenges that come their way.
