The 3 Birthday Traditions Our Family Never Skips: Ideas for Making Birthdays Special
/Birthdays are pretty special in our family. We don’t do big birthday parties or major gifts, but we do celebrate as a family with 3 special traditions every year on every family member’s birthday.

Birthday Banner
There is something so sweet about homemade birthday decorations, especially a birthday banner. They don’t need to be Pinterest perfect, in fact, they don’t have to be perfect at all. Just roll out some paper, add some markers and stickers (or paint if you are brave) and decorate that birthday banner. Tape it up on the wall and you have the best decorations!!
Make your own birthday cake
In our family, make your own birthday cake involves box mix and store bought frosting. The kids usually all frost together and decorate however the birthday child has envisioned the cake. We have done some crazy, involved cakes that are filled with candy and then some basic yellow cake, chocolate frosting cakes. One year, Sloane wanted a rainbow layer cake and Ruby made all the layers herself! Then, the kids all frosted together.
Anything you choose for breakfast
Starting when the children were old enough to talk, we let them choose ANYTHING they wanted for their birthday breakfast. Nate chose hot dogs and french fries when he was three, and Ruby picked cookies and brownies. Sloane has always been pretty tame, she picks Dunkin Donuts every single year.
Whatever they choose, we put a birthday candle in it. We try to sing happy birthday as many times in the day as we can!
Does your family have any special birthday traditions? I would love to hear about them.
If you want to create a home that is filled with play and creativity, the key is to let your child know how much you value the time and effort they spent playing.
